چکیده

Embodied virtual reality faithfully renders users’ movements onto an avatar in a virtual 3D environment, supporting nuanced nonverbal behavior alongside verbal communication. To investigate communication behavior within this medium, we had 30 dyads complete two tasks using a shared visual workspace: negotiating an apartment layout and placing model furniture on an apartment floor plan. Dyads completed both tasks under three different conditions: face-to-face, embodied VR with visible full-body avatars, and no embodiment VR, where the participants shared a virtual space, but had no visible avatars. Both subjective measures of users’ experiences and detailed annotations of verbal and nonverbal behavior are used to understand how the media impact communication behavior. Embodied VR provides a high level of social presence with conversation patterns that are very similar to face-to-face interaction. In contrast, providing only the shared environment was generally found to be lonely and appears to lead to degraded communication. ACM Classification

EMBR: A Realtime Engine for Virtual Human Animation

Embodied agents can be a highly engaging interface device and even be used as a versatile research tool for empirical communication studies. However, they require high effort and expertise for their creation, assembly and animation control. Therefore, open animation engines and high level control languages are required to make embodied agents accessible to researchers and developers. We present...

Multimodal Communication in Inhabited Virtual Environments

This paper reports on ongoing research of various aspects of multi-modal interactions in a Virtual Reality environment in which visitors can interact in diverse ways with agents and objects in the environment. The virtual environment is a copy of a theatre and is inhabited by both embodied and non-embodied agents that can assist the visitor: providing information about the performances, selling...

Embodied Experiences in Immersive Virtual Enviornments: Effects on Pro-environmental Self- Efficacy and Behavior

This study explored whether sensorimotor experiences of cutting down a tree in a virtual forest would be more effective compared to mentally simulating the same experience in terms of increasing pro-environmental self-efficacy and behavior in the physical, non-mediated world. Two modalities for embodying the tree-cutting experience were compared: immersive virtual environment and mental simulat...

Where computers disappear, virtual humans appear

In this paper, we survey the role of virtual humans (or embodied conversational agents) in smart and ambient intelligence environments. Research in this area can profit from research done earlier in virtual reality environments and research on verbal and nonverbal interaction. We discuss virtual humans as social actors and argue that, rather than is common in traditional human–computer interfac...

An Embodied Conversational Agent with Asperger Syndrome

We discuss the development of an embodied conversational agent with Asperger-like communication skills. The agent was developed for use in educational software in a virtual environment specifically aimed at autism spectrum disorder software. We describe the design and implementation of the agent, and pay particular attention to the interaction between emotion, personality and social context. A ...
